The other issue is the actual quality of each TV. The better DVD players with upscalers such as the Cambridge Audio DVD99 fix this.

So much so that the DVD picture is often worse into an HDTV than into a SDTV. All HDTVs have built-in scalers too but they are not going to be of the same quality in the lowest cost TVs as they are just intended to work rather than to work really well.
