My personal suspicion is however that that will not be the case as I think that we will see yet another format, specifically 3D coming in the next few years. In a few years, that may be the best idea (if it's still even a viable format) as more progress will be made on other devices and formats. The Blu-ray choice is not a bad idea either but at this point in the game, I'd not be too concerned with it. If not, I'd 100% go with the stand alone model despite your space concerns. If you can see this in person, you'd have a better idea. Where as the stand alone TV looks like a more regular design from Toshiba and may have a lot higher quality build as well as picture. It does look sorta like some other Chinese sourced sets. I am not certain but I would venture to guess that the unit with the built-in DVD player is sourced from an OEM mfr and rebranded with the Toshiba name as it is very cost effective to do so.
The other issue is the actual quality of each TV. The better DVD players with upscalers such as the Cambridge Audio DVD99 fix this.
So much so that the DVD picture is often worse into an HDTV than into a SDTV. All HDTVs have built-in scalers too but they are not going to be of the same quality in the lowest cost TVs as they are just intended to work rather than to work really well. A lot of DVD players have uspscaling to HD which make their pictures much better on HDTVs.
Plus, you are gonna be frustrated when it does act-up. The DVD player could be fine and work for quite a while but you have no control over its picture quality, you get what you get. Personally, I always want to get items as separated as possible both to facilitate easy upgrades and integration with other components, but also due to serviceability. The DVD issue, which was the original question, is a good one. If that's the size that he wants and the price point, then it's not a bad choice at all. The TV will display HD broadcasts in 720p via the Component connections. Especially since it's going to be used with DVD as a source.
